REVIEW: Wilko’s Kiss Face Primer

Okay, I’ll be honest right from the start. Despite being a make-up fanatic since the tender age of 12, I honestly didn’t know what a primer was really used for up until a year ago. Hard to believe, right? I mean, I had heard the word and I knew that it is used underneath foundation, but considering the amount of make-up I cake onto my face every day, that seemed pretty pointless. Right?
Wrong. After talking to a helpful young woman in store at Boots one evening, she explained to me that primers are perfect for people like me who have troublesome skin. You’ll see a recurring theme throughout my reviews- I hate to repeat myself, but I think it’s important to discuss the way in which each product may or may not irritate our skin. I suffer from mild eczema (very rarely on my face unless I use a terribly chemically product), patches of dry skin, and the occasional oiliness on my “T zone”. If you have any of these problems and don’t use a primer, I strongly suggest trying one.

What does a face primer do?
Speaking generally, primers are used as a base layer underneath your foundation (often after moisturizing), and acts as a barrier between your skin and your make-up. There are two main goals that each primer aims to achieve: your make-up should go on smoother and evenly, and it should increase how long your make-up stays on for.

I’d already found a couple of primers which do the job, so I wasn’t set out to buy another. But when I came across Wilko’s new cosmetic range, I was instantly drawn to the cute fonts and girly packaging. It was also only £4.00.

Firstly, I moisturized my face with TONY MOLY’s Appletox Face Peeler, then I used a small amount of the primer all over my face, adding more to dry patches. Instantly, I was impressed. When trying out most other brands, the one thing that frustrates me is trying to make sure any excess cream and/or oiliness is gone before applying my make-up. What I found with this one, in fact, is that it is in no way oily at all! It’s difficult to describe, but it oddly reminds me of a velvet texture. Your skin feels smooth and sleek.

The product is just the right consistency, in my opinion. It isn’t too runny, so it is incredibly simple to use. It has no scent, which I liked. My skin doesn’t need any more chemicals than necessary, thank you very much!

So, for the moment of truth: does it actually work?
In regards to my foundation being applied more evenly, it definitely does the job. It pretty much neutralises any oily/dry patches. I can’t honestly judge as to whether it lasts longer, because it all depends what you’re doing with your face throughout the day. That said, due to the natural oils in my skin being unable to get through to my foundation quite so easily, it definitely helps to prevent it from smearing. I also do not get any irritation to my skin during use or afterwards. Yay!
Pros

  • Affordable
  • Cute, simple packaging
  • Easy to use
  • Lovely texture
  • Large enough tube so that it will last a while

Cons

  • … Uh… Pass?!

Conclusion
This is the first review thus far that I’ve been unable to list ANY negatives whatsoever. I hate to seem bias, and I believe that there is always room for improvement, so I always try to some up with at least one. But I just love this product! I would strongly suggest giving it a try if you haven’t already. Keep up the good work, Wilko’s!
