TUTORIAL: Polymer Clay Braided Bracelet

Hello, lovelies! I’m sorry I haven’t posted a tutorial for a while.

Here’s my quick and super easy braided/plaited clay bracelet tutorial! You can use any combination of colours you’d like to create a unique piece of statement jewelry that suits you.

What you’ll need:

  • Three balls of polymer clay
  • Clay varnish
  • Paintbrush
  • Dotting tool
  • Jewelry links
  • Bracelet chain with clasp
  • Oven
  • Charm (optional)

Step 1:
Begin with three different colours of polymer clay. Condition them so that they’re soft enough to work with.

Step 2:
Roll each ball of clay into long, thick sausage shapes. Try to keep them all of a similar thickness.

Step 3:
Pinch the ends together. Don’t worry about it being too neat as it’ll be chopped off later.

Step 4:
Plait the three pieces together, as if you were braiding hair. Now put it up against your wrist and decide how long you want it to be. Chop off the excess clay.
TIP: If you’re struggling with this step because the pieces keep sticking together, try rubbing a small amount of corn flour over them all.

Step 5:
Pinch the ends and roll them slightly so they look neater.

Step 6:
Use your dotting tool to poke a hole at each end, making sure it is big enough to fit your link through.

Step 7:
Put your braid on a baking tray, curving it slightly so that it’ll sit on your wrist easily. Bake it until hard, at gas mark 4 for around 20 minutes (depending on the thickness of your clay). Check frequently to make sure it isn’t burning.

Step 8:
Once cool, varnish the whole of your bracelet, getting in to all of those nooks and crannies.

Step 9:
Add your links and bracelet chain. Cut the chain to the correct length if necessary. Make sure your links are secure and won’t pull apart easily.

Step 10:
Attach a charm if desired.

Step 11:
Wear your gorgeous new bracelet!
